Sara Winther and Natalia Kosinska intend to appeal their non-nominations for the New Zealand Olympic sailing team, which was completed today by Finn class sailor Josh Junior and laser sailor Sam Meech.

Laser radial sailor Winther and women’s RS:X sailor Kosinska both missed out on selection along with men’s RS:X sailor JP Tobin.

New Zealand qualified the classes for Rio 2016, but Yachting New Zealand (YNZ) deemed that neither Winther nor Kosinska, 11th and 24th-place finishers respectively at last month’s World Cup in Hyères in France, had done enough to warrant a berth.

Winther’s 11th-place finish at last month’s Laser Radial World Championships in Puerto Vallarta in Mexico met the published benchmark for selection in the NZL Sailing Team as one of "New Zealand's top Olympic campaigners who have made the top 12 in their most recent (respective) class World Championships".

She sold one of her boats to compete at the regatta having entirely self-funded her campaign since being dropped from the NZL Sailing Team last year due to inconsistent form following a battle with injury.

Winther, who ensured her country a berth in the laser radial class with an 11th-place finish at the 2014 World Championships in Santander, confirmed on her Facebook page that she will be launching an appeal to the Sports Tribunal of New Zealand.

The New Zealand Herald states it will centre around a lack of clarity and transparency in YNZ’s selection process.

"YNZ's decision has come as a huge disappointment to me and I will be appealing...I have been reminded by YNZ that I am still bound by my athlete's agreement and can't comment on this issue," said the 34-year-old Winther, who competed at London 2012.

Tobin dropped his bid for Olympic selection last year citing a lack of support from the national body.

Today's announcement means New Zealand will not have a representative in the board-sailing class for the first time since it was introduced to the Olympics at Los Angeles 1984.

"We've taken a lot of flak recently from certain individuals around supporting or not supporting some of the classes," said YNZ high performance director, Jez Fanstone.

"We've supported all the classes in this Olympic cycle but when it comes to selections we have a high bar."

Junior and Meech join the five crews named back in March, including Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie in the women's 470, Peter Burling and Blair Tuke in the 49er, Alexandra Maloney and Molly Meech in the 49erFX, Paul Snow-Hansen and Daniel Willcox in the men's 470, and Gemma Jones and Jason Saunders in the Nacra 17.

Andrew Murdoch missed out on selection to Junior’s benefit, but he said he fully accepts the selectors' decision.
