Russia’s Valeriia Shabalina brought the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) European Open Championships to a close in style in Funchal by breaking her own world record in the women's SM14 200 metres individual medley.

Shabalina had begun the Championships by setting a world record in the S14 200m freestyle and ensured her events would draw to a close in the same manner by clocking a time of 2min 18.37sec, lowering her previous best by 2.96sec.

The triple gold medallist was followed home by the British duo Bethany Firth and Jessica-Jane Applegate, who clocked times of 2:21.24 and 2:26.49 respectively.

Roman Zhdanov capped his fine Championships by earning a fifth gold medal, with the Russian star finishing the S4 50m freestyle in a time of 39.57.

France’s David Smetanine earned the silver medal by touching home in 40.13, with Ukraine’s Andrii Derevinskyi a further second down to claim the final podium spot.

Denis Tarasov matched Zhdanov’s gold medal tally by winning the men’s S8 50m freestyle in 26.21, with his victory seeing the Russian team finish second on the overall medals table at the Championships on a tally of 30 gold medals.

Tarasov finished the event ahead of the Ukrainian pair of Bohdan Hrynenko and Iurii Bozhynsky, who claimed the remaining podium spots in 26.92 and 27.20.

Having shared the women’s S5 100 metres freestyle event gold medal yesterday after finishing tied with Norway’s Sarah Louise Rung in the Complexo Olimpico de Piscinas da Penteada, Teresa Perales emerged as the sole winner of the women's 50m freestyle.

The 40-year-old Spanish star was able to win the race in a time of 38.01, with Brazil’s Joana Maria Silva winning open silver by clocking 38.16.

European silver was claimed by the Czech Republic’s Bela Trebinova after she finished in 38.62, while a time of 42.30 was enough for France’s Anita Fatis to complete the podium.

The final world record of the Championships was claimed by Ukraine’s Oksana Khrul, after she triumphed in a time of 35.48 in the women’s S6 50m butterfly event.

Britain’s Eleanor Robinson also swam faster than Khrul’s previous record time of 36.05, but was forced to settle for the silver medal by ending in 35.66.

Ireland’s Nicole Turner rounded of the medal places, as she finished the race in a time of 38.17 to win the bronze medal.

Khrul’s victory helped the Ukrainian team finish top of the overall medals table, with 37 golds, 36 silver and 25 bronze.

The Russian squad ended seven gold medals behind the Ukrainians, with Britain emerging as the third strongest nation having won 20 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze.
