Germany's Karla Borger and Britta Buethe overcame Polish pair Kinga Kolosinska and Monika Brzostek in a clash between the top seeds to reach the quarter-finals of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Tour Sochi Open today.

Borger and Buethe, seeded first, won a comfortable first set before being severely in the second, eventually prevailing 21-15, 23-21.

They are among three German teams to make it through to the last eight.

Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler knocked-out United States' Emily Day and Jennifer Kessy, 21-14, 21-17 and Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude overcame another US duo, Brittany Hochevar and Jennifer Fopma, 21-16, 17-21, 15-8.

Greek qualifiers Vicky Arvaniti and Penny Karagouni were another duo to continue their superb form with a 21-16, 21-14 triumph over Switzerland's Nina Betschart and Tanja Huberli.

There were better fortunes for Poland in the men's draw as Poland's Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel produced a superb performance to oust the top-seeded Austrians.

The Polish duo overcame Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst 21-16, 21-19.

It was a less successful day for Russia as only two of their men's teams remained after the opening two sessions of elimination play.

Konstantin Semenov and Viacheslav Krasilnikov rallied from a first set defeat to defeat sixth-seeded Bartosz Losiak and Piotr Kantor of Poland 23-21, 21-18.

Qualifiers Yaroslav Koshkarev and Ruslan Bykanov also lost the first set in the final match of the day before storming back to the delight of the crown to beat Grant O'Gorman and Sam Pedlow of Canada 15-21, 21-15, 16-14.
