Muhammad is due to become the first American athlete to compete at the Games wearing a hijab, the headscarf worn by muslim women, having booked her place by winning bronze at the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Sabre World Cup in Athens during January.

She had already made history as the first muslim woman to compete for the United States at fencing and discusses her journey to Rio 2016 during the video.

The campaign will see several American stars tackle a variety of subjects, including talking about their favourite Olympic and Paralympic memories, what it means for them to compete at Rio 2016 and the role they believe sport can play in society.

Los Angeles 2024 claim that the videos reflect their commitment to keeping athletes at the heart of their bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as reflecting their desire to use technology to connect with young people.

“With less than 100 days to go until Rio 2016, the Olympic and Paralympic Games are nearly here for the thousands of athletes who have dedicated themselves to their sports over the last four years,” Janet Evans, Los Angeles 2024 vice-chair and director of athlete relations, said. 

“Athletes are the stars of the Games and so we wanted to put the spotlight on them and give them the attention they deserve in the lead up to Rio 2016.

“We are completely focused on athletes at LA 2024 and are committed to delivering the ultimate, personalised athlete experience if we have the honour of hosting the Games in 2024.

“With an ideal Olympic climate and a wealth of existing world-class venues and facilities, we believe we are ideally positioned to do just that.”

Videos will be posted on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in the build-up to the Games, with 18-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps among the athletes set to feature.

Fellow swimmer Missy Franklin, two-time Olympic gymnastics gold medallist Gabby Douglas and Paralympic sprinter Richard Browne are also due to star in videos.
