International Ski Federation (FIS) President Gian-Franco Kasper has vowed to continue working to boost participation numbers in the sport after the recording of high levels over the last season.

According to an independent report on mountain tourism, there are currently an estimated 125 million skiers and snowboarders.

The report has tracked visits since 2000 and claims "stable" numbers of skiers and snowboarders.

This comes despite warm temperatures in many European resorts for the early part of this season, making conditions difficult.

Jackson Hole resort in United States has reported its second highest number of visitors on record.

Scandanvia’s largest resort operator, Skistar, has also reported a nine per cent increase in booking volumes compared to the previous year, in part due to its strong Valle’s kids programme.

“These signs are good, but can also be dangerous," said Kasper, who is expected to replace International Ice Hockey Federation President René Fasel on the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) later this year.

"Many will feel they can rest on their laurels, when in fact this is the perfect time to make a push.

"FIS will be doing this with the 'Bring Children to the Snow' campaign and we hope everyone will join.”

"Bring Children to the Snow", aimed particularly at those aged four to 14 and their families, is the "key initiative introduced by FIS to promote snow activities as the healthy recreational activity for children and youth in winter".

It seeks to achieve this vision through two primary events: FIS SnowKidz and World Snow Day.
