Australia’s top competitors will seek to stake their claim for berths in their country’s team for this year's Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro at the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Para-Triathlon Event in Castlereagh tomorrow.

The event will be the final opportunity for the home athletes to show their form before the Australian selections for the Paralympics are due to be decided in May.

Bill Chaffey looks on course to claim the spot in the PT1 event as he tops the current standings after earning his fifth world title last year in Chicago.

Victories at the Para-Triathlon Oceania Championships and the Australian Para-Triathlon National Championships have solidified his position but compatriot Nic Beveridge will also look to further his claim.

Joseph Townsend will hope to challenge the duo in the men’s race, having been added to Britain’s elite squad for 2016 last month.

Australia’s Emily Tapp and Sarah Tait will be expected to go head-to-head in the women’s event after winning the Oceania Championships and National Championships respectively.

Canada’s Kimberly Fawcett-Smith will face the challenge of Russia’s Veronika Gabitova, Japan’s Yakuza Hata and the United States’ Sarah Reinersten in a strong field for the women’s PT2 event.

A battle between the Australian and Asian champions is due to take place in the men’s PT5 race, with Jonathan Goerlach due to take on Japan’s Ryu Nakazawa.

Australian national champion Justin Godfrey will face Brazil’s Leonardo Curvelo in the men’s PT3 race, while fellow Australian Kerryn Harvey is the sole competitor in the women’s event.

Hungary’s Peter Boronkay will look to justify his status as the top ranked man in the world in the PT4 classification when he faces Brazil’s Marcelo Collet and Britain’s George Peasgood.

A strong challenge is also expected from Japan’s Keiichi Sato, Australia’s Jack Swift and Russia’s Alexander Yalchik.

Britain's Lauren Steadman will hope to replicate her form from 2015, when she went through the season unbeaten.

She faces Canada’s Chantal Givens, Australia’s Kate Doughty and fellow Briton Clare Cunningham in the women’s event.
