Top seeds Philip Dalhausser and Nicholas Lucena claimed the gold medal in the men's event at the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Tour Fuzhou Open after they overcame Italy’s Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo.

The American duo began the day by earning a straight sets 21-19, 21-13 win over Latvia’s Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins to book their place in the final.

They then met Nicolai and Lupo after they defeated Xiamen Open gold medallists Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira of Spain 17-21, 21-14, 15-13 scoreline.

Dalhausser and Lucena dominated tye gold medal contest as the pair earned the first set 21-18, before racing into a 17-13 lead in the second.

Their Italian opponents could not close the gap in the closing stages of the set, which the top seeds eventually won 21-15 to claim their second title of the year, having won the Maceio Open.

“Hats off to Nicolai and Lupo,” said Lucena afterwards.

“Lupo has been sick all weekend and they played smooth, it’s frustrating playing against him.

“Phil got some blocks on the big guy, we switched it up and were just able to side out and pass and set in the rain so I’m happy to get this gold.

“It’s good for us for the Olympics and it’s a good feeling.”

Spain’s Herrera and Gavira bounced back from their semi-final loss to beat Latvians Samoilovs and Smedins 17-21, 21-19, 15-12 in the bronze medal tie.

In the women’s competition Switzerland’s Joana Heidrich and Nadine Zumkehr moved into their first semi-final of the season after defeating Finland’s Riikka Lehtonen and Taru Lahti 13-21, 26-24, 15-13.

They will now face Germany’s Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude, who overcame Austria's Stefanie Schwaiger and Barbara Hansel 21-13, 21-18.

Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Vergé-Dépré became the second Swiss pairing to reach the semi-finals.

They secured a 21-15, 19-21, 15-12 win over Argentina's Ana Gallay and Georgina Klug.

The duo will face the daunting prospect of meeting America’s Kerri Walsh and April Ross after the top seeds defeated compatriots Lane Carico and Summer Ross 16-21, 22-24 in their quarter-final clash.
