The draw for the blind football tournament at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games will take place on April 25 in the Brazilian city, the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) has announced.

It will be held at the Organising Committee's headquarters and will be conducted by Rio 2016 staff and IBSA Football Committee chairman Ulrich Pfisterer at 11am local time.

The eight teams - Brazil, the defending Paralympic Games gold medallists, Argentina, Mexico, Russia, Turkey, China, Iran and Morocco - have been invited to attend the draw at their own expense.

They will be split into groups of four, with the top two sides progressing to the semi-finals.

Those nations who finish in the bottom two spots will then compete in the 5th to 8th place classification round.

Organisers are hoping to produce a live stream of the event but this is yet to be finalised or confirmed, though it will be recorded and uploaded straight to the internet shortly after it has concluded, according to the IBSA Football Committee.

The Brazilians will be the team to beat on home soil, having won all three Paralympic tournaments contested so far.

They secured gold at London 2012 by claiming a comfortable 2-0 victory over France and will go into the event as favourites, particularly with the backing of a home crowd.

Mexico, Russia and Morocco will make their Paralympic blind football debuts.

Brazil are the number one ranked side in the world in 5-a-side blind football, with fellow South American side Argentina, silver medallists at Athens 2004 and bronze medallists in Beijing four years later, currently occupying second.

Spain are leading the Europeans in third, while China are ahead of France in fourth and Turkey are in sixth position.

The table is based on a new system to calculate the standings, that includes events stretching back over the past four years, and will be updated on a rolling basis.

It was released by the IBSA Football Committee in February.

Blind football at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games is scheduled for September 9 to 17 at the Olympic Tennis Centre.
