World champion Bianca Walkden won the women’s over 73 kilogram title at the World Taekwondo President’s Cup in Bonn tonight, securing Great Britain’s first-ever senior gold medal at the event.

The Liverpool-born star, who has cemented a heavyweight spot for Team GB at this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, beat Serbia’s Ana Bajic 2-0 in the final.

Walkden dropped only three points in her four contests after receiving a first-round bye, but she admitted struggling to get the scoreboard ticking over as regularly as she would have liked.

"I felt like I was in control throughout the competition and the final," said the 24-year-old, who returns to Europe in a fortnight for the German Open in Hamburg.

"But it was quite hard to score on the new system.

"It’s difficult to go high because the sensors have changed.

"But overall I did well.

"This is all about preparation for the Olympics.

"Hopefully, I can keep it going and keep a winning streak on until Rio."

Walkden is in pole position to make her Olympic debut in Brazil though the athletes to fill the four qualified weights won’t be confirmed until June.

The day’s other senior final in Bonn saw Baku 2015 European Games bronze medallist Daniel Ros Gomez of Spain defeat Norway’s Mohammed Elhatri 1-0 in the men’s under 87kg category.

Hosts Germany claimed medals in the younger age groups as Antonios Andreopoulos beat Russia’s Daniil Kuvalov 14-5 in the cadet men’s under 49kg final and Vera Kachowitsch overcame the United States’ Ashleigh Ogan 5-1 in the cadet women’s under 37kg showdown.

There was disappointment, however, for the home nation in the junior women’s under 55kg final, where Jasmin Richter fell to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Russia’s Sofia Melnikova.

Competition in Bonn is scheduled to conclude tomorrow with all gold medallists given direct access to the 2016 European Taekwondo Union (ETU) Championships in Montreux in Switzerland.

More than 1,500 athletes are competing at the event, which is sanctioned by the World Taekwondo Federation but is organised by the ETU.
