Judokas will be aiming to boost their Rio 2016 Olympic chances when the Oceania Championships begin in Canberra tomorrow.

Fifty competitors from seven countries will take part at the Sport Combat Centre in the Australian capital, where significant ranking points for the Games in Brazil will be available.

Hosts Australia could see ten judokas qualify, with the men needing to be in the top 22 in the world in their weight division before the May 30 cut-off date.

The women, meanwhile, must be in the top 14 and with 400 points on offer in Canberra, some judokas can all-but seal their places.

In the women’s under 52kg, Australia’s Hannah Trotter is just outside the world's top 20 and will face competition from New Zealand’s Justine Bishop, who needs to win to move above Trotter in the standings.

Jake Andrewartha is Australia's only London 2012 Olympian still in contention, with the 26-year-old a competitor in the over 100kg division.

Australia's Diego Barretto will face a battle from compatriot Ryan Dill-Russell in the 90kg division while New Zealand’s world number 26 Jason Koster will be one to watch at under 100kg.

World number 13 Katharina Haecker, another Australian, will be able to take a big stride to Rio at under 63kg while compatriot Miranda Giambelli will start the under 78kg class ranked 20th in the world.

"I would say my biggest opponent at this event is actually one of my team-mates Maeve Coughlan," said Haecker.

“She is a really talented junior with great potential for the future.”

If athletes fall outside of the top 22 and top 14 in their respective divisions they can still qualify for Rio if they are the highest ranked athlete in Oceania.

The senior men's and women's action will take place tomorrow, with cadet boys and girls on Saturday (April 9).

Kata and Masters action will take place on Sunday (April 10).
