Sahit Prizreni of Australia secured a place at a third Olympic Games today at the Africa-Oceania Rio 2016 wrestling qualifier in Algiers, despite narrowly losing his under 65 kilograms freestyle final against Amas Daniel of Nigeria.

Prizreni finished 17th and 16th for Albania at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 respectively and won a bronze medal at the 2007 World Championships in the under 60kg division before switching nationality.

He pinned Namibian opponent Jason Afrikaner 11-2 in his semi-final before narrowly missing out 9-8 to Daniel in the final.

“I’m excited about going,” the 33-year-old Prizreni, who carried Albania's flag at the Opening Ceremony of Beijing 2008 before switching to nationalities to Australia in 2014, said afterwards.

“And, I hope it will be ‘third time lucky’ for me.”

It proved a good day of freestyle competition for Australia in the Algerian capital as Talgat Ilyasov also secured a place in the under 74kg event after defeating All-African Games champon Ayad Ibrahim of Egypt 9-1.

He lost his final 6-3 to Augusto Midana of Guinea-Bissau.

Aly Hamdy Amin Rabei Moustafa qualified in the under 97kg event despite losing his final 3-1 to Soso Tamarau of Nigeria.

Diaaeldin Abdelmottaleb beat Tunisia's Slim Trabelsi 13-3 to win the gold medal in the under 125kg heavyweight category.

At the other end of the weight divisions, Senegal's Beijing 2008 Olympian Adama Diatta beat fellow qualifier Chakir Ansari of Morocco, 10-0 to claim under 57kg gold.
