Alican Kaynar kept his nerve in the penultimate Finn class race of the Trofeo Princesa Sofía in the Bay of Palma in Spain to secure a place for Turkey at this year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Kaynar came 14th to finish with a 10.5 points margin over Czech Republic's Ondrej Teply, who made a 31st and 13th in the last two races of the season.

"It was a very tough week," said Kaynar, who represented his country at London 2012 and has claimed a European berth.

"This week, more than 30 people were trying to qualify their country.

"And also, all the time, it was windy conditions, from many directions, so it was very challenging."

In the 49er FX class, Noora Ruskola and Camilla Cedercreutz have Finland's qualification within their grasp after winning the penultimate race, squeezing into tomorrow’s medal race in 10th place overall.

The last Rio 2016 spot for a European country  in the men's 470 class had to be decided on countback as Ukraine's Boris Shvets and Pavlo Matsuyev pipped young Italian pair Matteo Capurro and Matteo Puppo.

On the final reach of the last race, Capurro and Puppo appeared to have done enough to wrest the qualification place from Shvets and Matsuyev, who had started the day with a three-point lead over the Italians.

Both finished locked on 126 points apiece, in 14th and 15th respectively, but the Ukrainians finished the regatta with their best score being a second place, outpointing the Italians' sixth.

Israel qualified for Rio 2016 in the women's 470 class thanks to the ninth-place finish of London 2012 Olympian Gil Cohen and Nina Amir, who also confirmed their own selection.

Hungary qualified in the RS:X and the laser radial, where Maria Erdi closed out qualification by making the medal race cut in ninth.

The laser radials have two country qualification spots with Sara Carmo ensuring the other berth for Portugal.

The two laser men’s spots went to Russia and Czech Republic.

Australia’s Mat Belcher and Will Ryan of Australia sat out the last race of the men's 470 class today, owing to their comfortable lead.

Four-time world champions Billy Besson and Marie Riou of France need only to compete in the Nacra 17 medal race to clinch the title.

A broken rudder for world champion Giles Scott of Great Britain leaves New Zealand's Josh Junior with a straight run at the Finn title, 19 points ahead of second.

Ireland's Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern will start the 49er medal race with a 15-point lead over Olympic champions Nathan Outterridge and Iain Jensen of Australia, who pulled themselves up to second today.

The big ticket matches of the medal races will be in the women's 470 class where Brazil's Fernanda Oliveira and Ana Barbachan start tied on the same points as the young British crew Amy Seabright and Anna Carpenter.

New Zealand’s Andy Maloney has a 17-point lead in the laser class.
