Belgium’s David Goffin produced a stirring comeback to defeat France’s Gilles Simon at the Tennis Center Park at Crandon Park and reach the last four of the men’s draw of the Miami Open.

The 25-year-old was looking to reach his second semi-final at an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event, having managed the feat for the first time at Indian Wells earlier this month.

Goffin was unable to take his opportunities in the first set, despite forcing six break points.

Simon converted one of his two chances to win the opener 6-3.

Goffin, though, proved dominant throughout the duration of the second set as he put considerable pressure on his opponent’s second serve to help take it 6-2.

He maintained the momentum throughout the decider to seal a 3-6., 6-2, 6-1 victory and consign Simon to a third defeat at the quarter-final stage of the tournament, having also been beaten at this stage in 2011 and 2013.

After becoming the first Belgian to reach the semi-finals at the Miami Open, Goffin will have to raise his game further to reach the final as he now faces the challenge of Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.

The world number one made light work of the Czech Republic’s Tomáš Berdych, sealing a routine 6-3, 6-3 win.

The result keeps Djokovic on course to claim his third straight Miami Open crown and equal Andre Agassi’s record, with the American having won the tournament a total of six times.

Australian Open winner Angelique Kerber secured a routine 6-2, 6-3 victory over America’s Madison Keys in the women’s quarter-finals.

Having defeated the home favourite, the German will now face Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka, who has continued her fine from after winning at Indian Wells.

Azarenka won a tough opening set 6-4 against Britain’s Johanna Konta before claiming the second 6-2 to claim a straight sets victory.

Their semi-final clash is due to take place tomorrow with the Switzerland’s Timea Bacinszky and Russia’s Svetlana Kuzentsova meeting in the other last four clash.
