Italy's national airline Alitalia has been unveiled as a Top sponsor for Rome's bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

The carrier has signed on to help the capital's efforts after also supporting the 1960 Games in Rome, the last time they were held in the city.

A partnership between Alitalia has been signed with Rome 2024 officials and the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), with the airline now set to support the Olympic bid with a campaign titled "Prossima destinazione Roma2024".

Rome's message will be promoted in magazines both on board and on the ground in airport lounges, as well as through announcements and on the company's website and social media platforms.

The "Alitalia per lo Sport” project, which aims to promote sporting values and the culture of sport, will also be run in the country.

It is not a surprising link-up as Rome 2024 bid chairman Luca di Montezemolo is also the current chairman of Alitalia.

The airline previously supported the 1990 FIFA World Cup which was held in Italy, as well as Milan's Expo2015 and the Rome International Tennis Tournament last year.

Twenty-seven airports are served in Italy by Alitalia, which would likely play a key transport and logistics role if Rome is successful with its bid.

The capital hopes to host events across the country, with sailing earmarked for Cagliari on the island of Sardinia.

The football competitions will be held across Italy, including at Milan's famous San Siro stadium.

Also proposed is the Juventus Stadium, where last season's Serie A champions play their home matches, and Stadio San Paolo, home of Napoli.

Other venues chosen are the Bentegoda Stadium in Verona, Friuli Stadium in Udine, Luigi Ferraris Stadium in Genoa, Dall'Ara Stadium in Bologna, Franchi Stadium in Florence, St Nicholas Stadium in Bari and Barbera Stadium in Palermo. 

The two finals would be held at Rome's Stadio Olimpico. 

Rome last week claimed the support of 474,000 companies in the city after signing an agreement with the capital's Chamber of Commerce.

They are competing with Budapest, Los Angeles and Paris for the 2024 hosting rights.

The International Olympic Committee are due to make a decision at its Session in Lima in 2017.
