Commonwealth Games silver medallist Devendro Singh Laishram revived India’s prospects at the AIBA Asian/Oceanian Qualification Event by progressing to the quarter-finals of the light flyweight division in Qian’an in China today.

Indian boxers had endured a difficult time at the competition to date, with New Delhi 2010 light welterweight gold medallist Manoj Kumar one of the highest-profile casualties.

But they enjoyed a slightly improved showing on day four as Laishram, seeded fourth, overcame Malaysia's Mohd Redzuan Muhamad Fuad Bin with a unanimous victory to book his spot in the last eight of the tournament.

His team-mate Shiva Thapa, who competes at bantamweight and won bronze at last year’s AIBA World Championships, is also through after he beat Myeong Kwan-lee in similar style to justify his number one seeding.

India didn’t have it all their own way, however, as Glasgow 2014 welterweight silver medallist Mandeep Jangra crashed out with defeat to Thailand's Saylom Ardee.

Charly Suarez of the Philippines, who earned silver at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, secured his spot in the last eight of the lightweight competition by proving too strong for Chinese Taipei’s Lai Chu-en.

The 27-year-old, a double Southeast Asian Games gold medallist, dominated from start to finish, with each judge scoring the bout 30-26 in his favour.

“He is still raw but I did not let my guard down because he is quick and has power,” Suarez said.

His compatriot Nesthy Petecio, who fights in the women’s featherweight division, also powered to a commanding triumph, easing to a unanimous success in her clash with Jennifer Chieng of the Federated States of Micronesia.

Elsewhere on day four, Australian Alex Winwood’s dream of appearing at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is over after he was soundly beaten by Kyrgyzstan's number three seed Azat Usenaliev in the Chinese city.

Oceanian competitors are joining their Asian counterparts at an Olympic qualification tournament for the first time in history.

The top three boxers in each category from the men's competition and top two from the women's draw will secure qualification for this summer's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
