China’s Huang Yuxiang secured the men’s singles crown at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) New Zealand Open to deny Japan’s Riichi Takeshita a second title at the North Shore Events Centre in Auckland today.

Huang, who was involved in a nervy three-game semi-final yesterday with Malaysia’s Teck Zhi Soo which came after he had ousted top seed Son Wan-Ho of South Korea in the last eight, raced to the opening game 21-12.

The 13th seed then had the momentum and capitalised with ruthless effect, taking the second game 21-17 to seal victory.

“Riichi has won in New Zealand twice before in competitions so to win here gives me a lot of confidence for the future,” Huang said.

“I am happy with how I played and now look ahead to the Olympic Games and hopefully as part of the Chinese team.”

Japan’s unseeded duo Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota sprung the biggest surprise on the final day as they won the women’s doubles tournament by overcoming second seeds Chang Ye-na and Lee So-hee of South Korea.

Perhaps affected by their marathon semi-final success yesterday, the South Korean pair began slowly as Fukushima and Hirota took full advantage, moving into the lead by sealing the opening game 21-13.

The second seeds led 4-1 in the second game but were unable to press home their advantage as the Japanese team fought back to clinch the title by virtue of a 21-17 scoreline.

South Korea did enjoy double success as the competition in Auckland came to a close as women’s singles top seed Sung Ji-hyun proved too strong for Japan’s Aya Ohori, who cruised to victory with a 21-15, 21-17 triumph.

Following’s Sung’s success, her team-mates Ko Sung-hyun and Shin Baek-cheol were crowned New Zealand Open champions in the men’s doubles as they defeated Indonesia’s Angga Pratama and Ricky Suwardi 21-18, 21-14.

The mixed doubles crown went the way of Malaysia as Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh saw off the challenge of China’s Zheng Siwei and Li Yinhui with a 21-19, 22-20 win.
