Emirati climber Dana Al Al has been handed a major boost after the United Arab Emirates National Olympic Committee (UAE NOC) agreed to sponsor her efforts to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

The adventurer previously climbed Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, in 2013, before reaching the summit of Mount Elbrus, Europe's highest mountain, in Russia two-years later.

Despite the mountains having heights of 5,985 and 5,642 metres respectively, Al Al will now be hoping to surpass those efforts by reaching the summit of Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world at 8,848m.

The UAE NOC are backing her efforts after signing a sponsorship deal, which will see them help with her early preparation and training programme.

She thanked UAE NOC President Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for pledging to support her aim of becoming the first Emirati to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

"Hoisting the UAE flag on the summits is a priceless moment,” she said.

“I dream of raising the UAE flag on Mount Everest.”

The climber has already got her preparations underway, by training between three to five days per week in order to develop her skills and achieve the fitness necessary to achieve her aim.

As part of her programme, she is tackling mountain peaks such as Aconcagua in Argentina, the highest mountain in the Americas which has an altitude of 6,962m.

She expects that reaching the summit of Everest could take five days, taking into account rest and relaxation time.

However, she admits that other factors could slow her progress, including climate change and low pressure.

"The aim of this move is to foster partnerships with experts and review the successful practical experiences in various sports fields in keeping with the NOC's mission and effective role it plays in disseminating the principles of cooperation and fair competition,” said Wijdan Dahkoni, director of marketing and media at the UAE NOC.
