The 25-year-old had settled for second place in yesterday’s time trial event behind Colombia’s Olympic champion Mariana Pajon, but the result secured her a strong seeding for the semi-finals.

Buchanan was able to cruise into the final at the Argentine track by winning her eight-woman semi-final in a time of 34.789 sec, with half the field advancing.

Her rivalry would be resumed with Pajon, who won the second semi-final in 34.832 to remain on course for her third consecutive World Cup win at the venue.

However Buchanan would ultimately claim the victory as she held off her Colombian rival in the final to triumph in a time of 33.663.

Pajon crossed the line narrowly adrift in 33.895 to claim second, while Dutch rider Laura Smulders completed the podium in 35.201.

European Games gold medallist Simone Christensen was just edged out of the medals, with the Dane finishing in a time of 35.226.

American cyclists dominated the men’s competition, with Corben Sharrah claiming the victory by posting a time of 30.973 in the final.

His team-mate Connor Fields made it an American one-two by completing the course in 31.148, while France’s Amidou Mir secured bronze by clocking 31.560.

It meant that the home favourite Exequiel Torres would miss out on a podium spot, with the Argentine finishing fourth in 32.176.

The World Cup will continue in Manchester during April, with the third event of the season due to be held in The Netherlands the following month.

The final two events will be held at Rock Hill and Sarasota in the United States in October.
