Domestic abuse charges at set to be dropped against Picabo Street after the Olympic skiing champion had allegedly pushed her father down a flight of stairs.

The 44-year-old had been arrested on December 23 at her home in 2002 Olympic host Salt Lake City following a fight with her father Roland.

Roland had crashed his car into the house when attempting to leave, before allegedly pulling his daughters hair in the ensuing fight.

Street was claimed to have pushed her father down the stairs, which reportedly left him with cuts to his elbow and neck.

She was accused of having grabbed him around the shoulders and neck, while the three-time Olympian reportedly told officers that she had locked Roland in the basement before calling the police.

Street was charged with three counts of misdemeanor domestic violence in the presence of a child and one count of misdemeanor assault, with the incident having said to have occurred in front of her three children.

Her lawyer claimed the skier had been defending herself during the fight.

The charges are now expected to be dropped, with prosecutors having claimed to have learned of further witness statements.

They believe the case should no longer be dealt with in court, with the state’s Adult and Aging Services Division recommended to investigate the case.

Street was one of the world's most famous and popular skiers at the height of her career, which peaked with Super-G Olympic gold medal at Nagano in 1998.

She also won a silver medal at the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, and World Championship downhill gold in Sierra Nevada in 1996.

Street became the first American woman to win the World Cup downhill title in 1995 but her time in the sport was blighted by serious knee injuries.

Street retired after finishing 16th in the downhill at the Salt Lake City Games, and went on to work as an analyst for FOX Sports at Sochi 2014.
