Indonesian capital Jakarta will host the 2016 e-Sports World Championships, the sport’s governing body has announced.

The eighth edition of the event will be held at the Ancol Beach City Auditorium over three days in October, with exact dates and titles on offer still to be confirmed by the International e-Sports Federation (IeSF).

The organisation has revealed that e-sports has been selected as the sports event of the extreme and adventurous category at the 6th TAFISA World Sports for All Games, which will also be hosted in Jakarta from October 6 to 12.

The IeSF has informed its members and relevant stakeholders of the decision to award the competition, the only e-Sports event worldwide where players represent their countries, to Jakarta following a meeting of its Board.

Competing countries will now take part in a series of national qualifiers to determine who participates in the eagerly-anticipated World Championships in a sport which continues to grow across the globe.

Those who win their respective qualification tournaments will be chosen to go to the event in Jakarta.

A total of 43 nations are currently members of the IeSF, with the last World Championships, staged in Seoul, South Korea last year, attracting over 200 competitors from a total of 27 nations.

The best performing team at the event were Serbia, who took the overall title ahead of closest rivals and hosts South Korea.

The IeSF was established in the Asian nation in 2008 following support from the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism.

The governing body held an IeSF Challenge the following year, the first-ever international e-Sports tournament, before the Grand Final took place in 2010.

It then undertook a rebrand to the World Championships in 2011, with the competition five years ago held in Andong, South Korea.

e-Sports are set to feature at the inaugural Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) World Beach Games in San Diego in 2017.
