The World Championship silver medallist made light work of her opponents throughout the duration of the competition in Latvia's capital to set up a gold medal encounter again Belarus’ Irina Kurachkina.

Mattsson was untroubled by her rival as she sealed a victory by fall, the triumph seeing the Swede secured her fourth straight European title and fifth in total.

Germany’s Nina Hemmer claimed the first bronze medal after the officials awarded her a win by fall over Romania’s Estera Dobre.

The next bronze medal bout was a far closer affair and was won by Ukraine’s Yulia Khavadzhy as she edged past Moldova’s Natalia Budu 5-2.

If Mattson victory was widely anticipated, there was a major surprise in the 60kg division where Finland’s Petra Olli met Ukraine’s Oksana Herhel in the gold medal tie.

Herhel, the current world champion, was expected to prove too strong for her 21-year-old opponent, a World Championship silver medallist in the 58kg category.

Olli was outwitted her opponent, though, avoiding several dangerous attacks throughout the tie and scoring frequently herself to seal an 8-2 victory.

“We’ve wrestled a number of times in the past, so I knew what to expect from her,” Olli said.

“I knew that if I wrestled smart, I would be okay."

Azerbaijan’s Yulia Ratkevich defeated Norway’s Charlotte Skauen by a fall to win the opening bronze medal tie.

Russia’s Yulia Prontsevich beat Hungary’s Gabriella Sleisz after a technical fall verdict to claim the other bronze medal. 

Another world champion, Italy's Frank Chamizo, also had a difficult gold medal tie and appeared to struggle due to an injured elbow.

He was came form 5-4 down, however, to defeat Turkey’s Mustafa Kaya in the 65kg contest and record an 8-6 win.

With world and European titles by his name, Chamizo confirmed afterwards that he would not compete again until the Olympic Games in August in an attempt to allow his elbow to recover properly.

Russia’s Israil Kasumov defeated Georgia’s Zurabi Iakobishvili 13-4 to secure a podium finish and Ukraine’s Semyon Radulov earned a victory by fall over Azerbaijan’s Agahueseyin Mustafaev to claim the other bronze medal. 

Having taken the scalps of America’s world champion Kyle Snyder and Olympic gold champion Jake Varner earlier this year, Russia’s Anzor Boltukaev was expected to be a threat in the 97kg division.

He fulfilled his promise, clinching gold by a technical fall win over Belarus’ Ivan Yankouski, with the win giving him the first European Championships crown of his career.

Germany’s Erik Thiele defeated Greece’s Micheil Tsikovani in the opening bronze medal bout and Georgia’s Elizbar Odikadze sealed a narrow 3-1 win over Ukraine’s Olympic silver medallist Valerii Andriitsev.
