Doubles players from the home country booked their places into the main draw of the 117th All England Badminton Championships at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham after winning the final round of qualifying.

Jenny Moore and Victoria Williams triumph set up a date with the fourth seeded Danish pairing of Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter in the women’s doubles competition.

The English duo had impressed throughout their contest against Germany's Jennifer Karnott and Franziska Volkmann, brushing aside their opponents 21-17, 21-18.

Their compatriots Ben Lane and Jess Pugh were less fortunate in the mixed doubles competition after they were defeated 21-15, 21-17 by Thailand’s Puavaranukroh Dechapol and Sapsiree Taerattanachai.

The tie of the day came in the men’s doubles competition as the English pairing of Matthew Nottingham and Harley Towler clashed against Scotland’s Martin Campbell and Patrick Machugh.

Nottingham and Towler appeared to be heading towards a first round tie against China’s Liu Cheng and Lu Kai after winning for opening game 21-16.

Their hopes, though, took a blow when they were forced into a decider after losing the second 21-19, before regaining the momentum to claim the third and final game 21-10.

“We were a bit nervous going into the match because of the scale of the event,” said Nottingham.

“In the second set we dropped a little bit and they made it hard for us to have momentum and rhythm in the game.

“They tried to battle back a little bit, but we stayed strong and played well.”

The main competition is due begin tomorrow, with the defending men’s champion Chen Long of China set to begin his quest for a third title in four years when he meets Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto.

Spain’s Carolina Marín will begin her defence of the women’s title when she meets South Korea’s Bae Yeon-ju.

There will be new champions in the men’s doubles event as Denmark’s Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen are unable to compete.

It follows Mogensen suffering an aneurysm in the right side of his brain during the European Team Championships in February, with the Dane still recovering from surgery.

China’s Tang Yuanting, winner of the women’s doubles title with Bao Yixin last year, will seek to defend crown with new partner Yu Yang.

Yixin is now competing in the mixed doubles with Liu Cheng, although their compatriots Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei begin as top seeds as the reigning champions.
