Canada overcame United States 8-2 to make a perfect start to their men's title defence at the World Junior Curling Championships in Copenhagen today.

The Canadians, who beat Switzerland 6-3 in the final of last year's event in Tallinn, made an electric start with two points in each of the first and third ends.

Four further points in the sixth led to the contest being declared over with two ends still to play.

"We're still learning quite a bit out here, but to start off like we did and get a quick one under our belts is a good feeling," said Canadian skipper Matt Dunstone.

"Hopefully, it'll just get better from here."

Switzerland also made a good start in their bid to return to the podium, overcoming debutants Turkey 9-2, while Sweden beat Denmark 10-2 and Russia got the better of South Korea, 7-2.

Scotland, bronze medal winners in 2015, also made a good start in overcoming Norway 7-4.

The Championships were originally awarded to Erzurum in eastern Turkey, but were reallocated to the Taarnby Curling Club close to the Danish capital last month due to security fears.

Built in 1978, the venue has hosted two World Senior Championships, as well as two European Mixed and four European Junior events.

Two rounds of the women's round-robin competition took place today in the tournament for those aged under 21 by the cut-off date of June 30 last year.

Canada, who also won the women's gold last year with a 8-2 final victory over Scotland, beat Switzerland 7-2 before a 10-3 victory over Sweden.

The team are skippered by Mary Fay, who also led the Canadian mixed team to gold at last month's Summer Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer.

Turkey gained a first ever World Junior Championships victory with an 8-6 win over Hungary, although the Hungarians later hit back with a shock 10-6 triumph over Scotland.

South Korea and the US were other unbeaten teams on the opening day of action.

The South Koreans overcame Russia 7-6 and Japan 8-3, while the US beat Sweden 8-6 and Turkey 10-4.

Round-robin action will continue over the next week before knock-out rounds culminating in medal matches a week today on March 13.
