The Japanese men’s team were always facing an uphill battle as their opponents had yet to lose a singles match throughout the duration of the competition.

Xu Xin ensured Japan’s task would become even greater, as the Chinese star secured an 11-6, 11-8, 11-8 victory over Jun Mizutani in the opening match of the final.

China moved closer to victory after Ma Long, who has only lost one of his of 29 singles ties at the event since 2008, sealed an 11-3, 11-6, 11-8 triumph over Maharu Yoshimura.

A straightforward 3-0 win was sealed by Zhang Jike, after he came from behind to defeat Japan’s Yuya Oshima 9-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-7.

“We have a strong team,” said Ma after the win.

“I do not feel under any great pressure because I know I have such great support.

“I have total trust in my team mates.”

England and South Korea were awarded bronze medals after they were beaten in yesterday’s semi-finals.

The Japanese women’s team were able to push China during their gold medal match, but they were ultimately forced to settle for silver.

Liu Shiwen gave China an ideal start as she defeated Ai Fukuhara 11-5, 11-6, 11-8, however her team-mate Li Xiaoxia had a more difficult encounter against Kasumi Ishikawa.

The 23-year-old Japanese player claimed the opening games 11-6, 11-7 to threaten to level the overall tie at 1-1, however Xiaoxia clawed her way back into proceedings by earning the third 11-9.

It sparked a momentum shift, with Xiaoxia claiming the remaining games 11-3, 11-5 to put her team on the brink of victory.

Ding Ning sealed the overall victory for China by defeating Ito Mima 8-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-1.

China have now won both titles at the event for three consecutive editions. 

Chinese Taipei and North Korea were able to claim bronze medals after being beaten in yesterday’s semi-finals.
