The duo led Nico Walther and Christian Poser of Germany by 63 points heading into the decider.

They duly produced two superb runs for a combined time of 1 min 39.50 sec, enough to win on the day and claim a maximum haul of 225 points.

Beat Hefti and Alex Baumann of Switzerland finished second, just 0.05 seconds behind, while Francesco Friedrich and Candy Bauer were a further tenth of a second back in third.

Walther and Poser had to settle for sixth place after a disastrous second run, but managed to hold on to second place overall after Latvians Ugus Zalims and Intars Dambis could only manage seventh.

It marks the first time sliders from a continent other than Europe or North America have claimed an overall bobsleigh World Cup title, and bodes well with two years to go until South Korea hosts the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

South Korea managed more success in the men's skeleton finale as Sungbin Yun finished second on the day and in the finale.

There was no stopping dominant Latvian Martins Dukurs as he claimed a seventh successive overall title.

The world champion finished 0.56 seconds clear of Yun in 1:40.82 for a dominant total of 1,785 points.

“This was an exceptional season for me," said the winner.

"Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen, and to everyone who comes to the races to support the Latvian team.

"And probably the most exciting part of the season is still ahead of us: the first test runs on the Olympic track in Pyeongchang in Korea.”

Yun was rewarded for a sixth consecutive podium finish to claim second with 1,575, while Martins' brother Tomass claimed third both overall and for the season with a time of 1:41.56.
