Germany's reigning world champion Lena Schöneborn began her Olympic season in perfect style with victory at the season-opening International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) World Cup event today in Cairo.

Schöneborn, also the Olympic gold medallist at Beijing 2008, struggled in the opening swimming discipline before beginning to show her dominance with a 27-8 record in the fencing section.

She maintained a narrow lead after the jump before increasing her advantage in the run-shoot to win ahead of compatriot Annika Schleu in a German 1-2.

France's Elodie Clouvel completed an all-European podium in third.

Hungary's Zsofia Foldhazi, United States' Margaux Isaksen and Japan's Natsumi Tomonaga occupied the next three positions.

“I am relieved that I managed through the day because it did not start well," said Schöneborn.

"The technique did not work and I was really frustrated after the swim.

“But as I always do in pentathlon I stayed focused on the next discipline and fencing went well, and riding was okay.

"I was glad it all worked out.

"My shooting wasn’t very good, I think, but it still was enough, it was good to collect some points and I hope I can keep going."

The event, attended today by Egyptian Minister of Youth and Sports Eng. Khaled Abdel Aziz, was praised by UIPM first vice-president Ivar Sisneiga.

“We are very happy with the way the competition was organised," said the Mexican.

"These are beautiful venues.

"I spoke with many of the athletes and they are very happy with the conditions they have here."

The men's individual final is set to take place tomorrow and the mixed relay on Sunday (February 28).
