The Rio 2016 Torch Relay will visit 329 towns and cities across all five regions of Brazil and reach 90 per cent of the population before arriving at the Maracanã Stadium for the Opening Ceremony after the route was announced at a special event today.

The Relay is due to begin in capital city Brasília on May 3 following the traditional lighting of the Olympic Flame in Ancient Olympia in Greece on April 21, and conclude in Rio de Janeiro on August 5.

The Torch will criss-cross the South American country, travelling 20,000 kilometres by road and 10,000 miles by air.

It is set to be carried by around 12,000 Torchbearers.

Organisers hope the Torch Relay route will exhibit the best cultural and lifestyle sites Brazil has to offer.

The Torch’s journey before the Olympic Cauldron is lit during the Opening Ceremony will take in some of Brazil’s best-known sights and landmarks, including the Fernando de Noronha, a volcanic archipelago located around 350km off the country’s northeast coast.

It is also due to visit areas such as the iconic Iguaçu Falls and the 17th century Jesuit ruins of São Miguel das Missões.

Rio 2016 has also revealed the uniform which will be worn during the 95-day route.

Olympic mascot Vinicius was the first to wear the new clothing during a ceremony held in Rio de Janeiro, an event attended by a healthy crowd despite the searing 40-degrees heat.

“By taking the Olympic flame to the whole country, we will be keeping our promise to give millions of people the chance to participate in a celebration that will stay in their memories for a long time,” Rio 2016 President Carlos Nuzman said.

“We want to see the pride of people in the streets, show our cultural diversity and our nature.

"We will reveal to the world the essence of our country.”

Following the beginning of the route in Brasília, it will travel down to the centre-west region, before the Torch heads to the southeast area, including visits to Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.

The northeast is due to be the next destination on the Torch’s journey, winding through parts of Salvador and Bahia, and then heads to proceed through rural areas of the country such as Pernambuco, Sergipe and Ceará.

The Torch will make its way down to São Paulo and on to Florianópolis, one of the area’s finest beach cities, before it returns to the southeast to take in the rich farmlands of São Paulo State.

The route will then pass along the north coast of São Paulo, gradually moving towards the host city of Rio de Janeiro, where the Torch will enjoy its own smaller relay before entering the Maracanã Stadium, which hosted the 2014 FIFA World Cup final, for the Opening Ceremony on August 5.

A Vida do Viajante (The Life of a Traveller) by Luiz Gonzaga will be the theme song for the Relay.

Judoka Érika Miranda, under 52 kilograms gold medallist at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, will be the first person to carry the Torch when it arrives in Brazil.

She will represent all of Brazil's athletes.

“Although the Games will be in Rio, us Brazilian athletes will be representing the whole nation,” Miranda said.

“With the flame going to every corner of the country, it’s a chance for people who won’t be coming to the Games to feel closer to event.”
