Two-time Paralympic champion Sherif Othman broke his own world record en route to winning the men’s up to 59 kilograms title at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Powerlifting World Cup in Dubai.

The 33-year-old Egyptian lifted 210.5kg to better the mark of 210kg he set on his debut in the weight category last year, also in the Emirati city.

Othman moved up to the division after winning gold in the men’s up to 54kg at the 2014 World Championships in Dubai.

Jordan’s Mohammad Tarbash took second with 171kg, while Thailand’s Narong Kasanun came third with 170kg.

Egypt’s Shaaban Ibrahim won the men’s up to 65kg by virtue of his lighter bodyweight to that of Algeria’s Hocine Bettir.

Both lifted 194kg, while Iran’s Hamzeh Mohammad was just behind in third with 193kg.

Othman’s team-mate Rehab Ahmed claimed Egypt’s second gold medal of the day in the women’s up to 50kg, propelling herself to fourth in the current Rio 2016 Paralympic rankings with a winning lift of 107kg.

Ukraine’s European champion Lidiia Soloviova took silver with 105kg as Uzbekistan’s Ruza Kuzieva completed the top three with 95kg.

Vietnam’s Hoang Tuyet Loan Chau lifted 102kg to come second ahead of Egypt’s Gihan Bayoumy in third with 99kg.

Competition in Dubai is due to continue tomorrow with the men’s up to 72kg and up to 80kg, and women’s up to 61kg and up to 67kg.

The 2016 IPC Powerlifting World Cup in Dubai is the penultimate opportunity for athletes to improve their place in the Paralympic rankings for Rio 2016.

The final chance will come at the World Cup in Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur, scheduled to take place from February 24 to 28.
