Egypt’s Nayel Nassar produced two clear rounds to claim victory at the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Jumping World Cup competition at Thermal in Canada.

The 25-year-old was able to produce an excellent first round on Lordan, despite the tricky course which often demanded riders to guide their horse through double and triple combinations.

After avoiding any penalties he was assured of a podium finish, with France’s Eric Navet and the United States’ Jamie Barge delivering the only other clear rounds to force a jump-off.

Navet was first to return to the course but saw his challenge fade after a misjudgement in the early stages of the event saw his horse Catypso knock down a railing to pick up a penalty.

As a result Barge was able to put herself into pole position for the victory by delivering another faultless round, ending in a time of 49.64sec.

However, she would be made to settle for the silver medal after Nassar was able to replicate the American’s feat in a quicker time, crossing the finishing line in 48.19.

“I only kind of saw Jamie go, but people said that she didn’t go inside the Longines oxer, going away from the gate," Nasser said afterwards.

“So I knew if I slipped inside there, I didn’t have to go crazy to catch her.

“I did six strides in the first line, eight in the second line; my horse has small stride.

"But then it was just a matter of jumping the last two jumps clean.”
