Therese Johaug became only the third woman to win 14 International Ski Federation (FIS) Cross-Country World Cup races in a single season as she led a Norwegian clean sweep of the podium in the 10 kilometres free technique mass start in Falun today.

The 27-year-old, a relay gold medallist at the Vancuover 2010 Winter Olympics, was triumphant in a time of 23 min 28.0 sec on the Swedish course to match the 14 wins achieved by Norway's Bente Skari in the 2002/3 season.

Only six-time Olympic champion Marit Bjoergen, another Norwegian, has done better than that, winning 17 times in 2011/12 and 15 times last season.

Johaug came ahead of Heidi Weng by just 8.8 sec with Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen third, 13.9 off the pace.

"I wanted to push really hard from the beginning today and see how many were able to come with me," said Johaug, who could yet go past Bjoergen's tally this season.

"In the end it was just Heidi and I pushed one more time going up the Mörderbacken because I didn't want to have to be in a sprint at the finish.

"It's been an amazing season so far.

"I really can't believe I have won so many races."

Johaug, the overall World Cup winner in 2013/14 and this year's Tour de Ski champion, continues to lead the standings this term with 1859 points.

Her compatriot Ingvild Flugstad Østberg is second on 1651 with Weng third on 1393.

Elsewhere, Sergey Ustiugov made it a hat-trick for Russian skiers in Sweden by winning the men's 15km mass start.

After Nikita Kriukov triumphed in the sprint in Stockholm on February 11, Maxim Vylegzhanin won the 10km in Falun yesterday and Ustiugov has maintained his country's good form.

He clocked 31:42.5 to edge Italy's Francesco de Fabiani by just 0.03 sec with Norway's overall World Cup leader Martin Johnsrud Sundby third, 0.04 behind the Russian.

Sundby, this year's Tour de Ski winner who is looking for a third consecutive overall crown, has 1817 points at the top of the standings this season and enjoys a commanding lead over second placed compatriot Finn Hågen Krogh who sits on 1074.

Norway also have the third placed skier, Petter Northug, who has 1005 points.

The men's and women's seasons will continue in Lahti, Finland, on February 20 and 21.
