Watch company Omega has launched a new luxury timepiece to mark the two-year countdown to the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Swiss-based company, which is a top-tier worldwide sponsor of the Olympic Games as it is a member of The Olympic Partner (TOP) programme, has produced an Seamaster Aqua Terra “Pyeongchang 2018” limited edition watch ahead of the Games in the South Korean resort.

The timepiece is the latest watch in the Aqua Terra collection and is inscribed with Pyeongchang 2018 in the five colours depicted on the Olympic Rings.

It carries a maritime theme and has a teakwood-deck dial, while the numerals “2018” align perfectly with the 18 and 20 minutes indices.

The stainless steel case measures 41 millimetres in diameter and features a caseback emblazoned with the Pyeongchang 2018 logo.

To correspond with the year in which the next Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games will be held, only 2,018 of the limited edition watches will be made.

The timepieces, which will be presented in an Olympic-themed box, will be made available next month and will cost $6,400 (£4,419/€5,698).

Omega, who signed an agreement to extend their TOP sponsorship to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games back in 2009, have also produced two special watches for Rio 2016 as part of its Speedmaster series, entitled Speedmaster Mark II and Bullhead.

The Bullhead watch was officially launched at an event on August 3, during which three Olympic athletes - Brazilian sailor and five-time medalist Torben Grael and his daughter Martine Grael, and her partner Kahena Kunze, were announced as “friends of the Omega brand”.

The two years to go milestone for Pyeongchang 2018 came last  Tuesday as the Opening Ceremony for the first-ever Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in South Korea is due to take place on February 9, 2018.

The event is scheduled to last until February 25 before the Winter Paralympics come begin March 9 and conclude on March 18.
