The first gold medal at this year's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro is likely to be won once again in the women's 10 metre air rifle.

The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) has released its schedule for Rio 2016, which is due to see the final in the event take place at 10.30am on August 6 - the morning after the Opening Ceremony.

Qualifying in the discipline will take place between 8.30am and 9.20am as the first full day of the Olympics begins.

At London 2012, the 10m air rifle provided the first gold as China's Yi Siling triumphed at the Royal Artillery Barracks, while Czech shooter Kateřina Emmons was the first Olympic champion at Beijing 2008 in the category.

The opening day will also see the men contest their final in the 10m air pistol from 3.30pm, before the women shoot in the same discipline on August 7.

The finals for the men's 10m air rifle and trap are scheduled to take place on August 8, with the medal action in the women's 25m pistol set for August 9.

On August 10 there will be finals in the men's 50m pistol and double trap, with the women's three positions rifle final taking place the following day on August 11.

August 12 will see finals in the men's 50m prone rifle and the women's skeet, with the men's 25m rapid fire and skeet finals scheduled for the following day.

Shooting action will conclude on August 14 with the men's three position rifle final. 

Gold medals will also be decided in judo, archery, cycling, fencing, swimming and weightlifting on day one of the Games, which will run to August 21.
