The announcement was made at the headquarters of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) in Rome, where the FIRS is based.

Skateboarding and roller skating were two of four demonstration sports at Nanjing 2014 along with wushu and sport climbing.

The Sports Lab was a venue designed to host the sports and the facility continues to function as it had during the YOG in a bid to increase the popularity of them for years to come.

On the back of the event, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach sent a letter to Aracu to express his thanks for the FIRS’s contribution to its success.

The city was further recognised last month, when it was announced that Nanjing will host the first edition of the World Roller Games rather than the original choice, Barcelona.

"Sharing IOC President Bach's view on how important the legacy with the city of Nanjing was, the FIRS started a cooperation with its municipality that produced a series of very important commitments; the first international seminar for coaches and ambassadors held in 2015, the 2016 World Speed Championships, the 2018 World Inline Hockey Championships and, above all, the first edition in 2017 of the FIRS World Roller Games," said Aracu.

"For all these reasons, and having witnessed with how much love, enthusiasm and expertise Nanjing cares for young people and roller sports, the FIRS will award the city of Nanjing with the title of world capital of roller sports."

Among those present at the event in Rome were CONI President Giovanni Malagò as well as IOC member Mario Pescante and Hu Wanjin, Deputy Mayor of Nanjing.

"Since the 2014 Youth Olympics, our main goal has been to become the world capital of roller sports," said Hu.

"We are working hard on the promotion of the roller sports and we hope that more and more young people could get close to these disciplines in the next few years."

The World Roller Games will, for the first time in one city, see the World Championships of 10 roller disciplines take place simultaneously.

It is due to take place over the course of 16 days featuring different competitions held at indoor and outdoor facilities.

Events will consist of artistic, speed, rink and inline hockey, roller freestyle, skateboarding, inline freestyle, inline downhill, roller derby and inline Alpine.
