Olympic champion Felix Loch claimed his fifth Luge World Championships title in Königssee today, before helping hosts Germany win the team relay.

Loch was fastest in both runs of the men’s singles, clocking times of 49.173sec and 49.691 for a combined 1:38.864.

Compatriot Ralf Palik was 0.423 seconds behind in the silver medal position, while Austria’s Wolfgang Kindl was third, 0.689 seconds adrift.

When taking into account his gold medal in the first-ever Sprint World Championships event on Friday (January 29), Loch now has a total of six gold and two silver medals at the International Luge Federation's flagship competition.

The 26-year-old is hot on the heels of the Italian record-holder Armin Zöggeler, who won a total of six golds, three silvers and one bronze during his illustrious career.

"How awesome is that; world champion on my home track - amazing," said Loch, who triumphed on the world’s oldest artificial track in front of 4,500 spectators.

"I have to confess the weather threw me a bit.

"And that makes me even happier I won the title.

"The spectators and the atmosphere here are fantastic."

Loch then joined forces with Natalie Geisenberger, Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt, all of whom won gold in their individual disciplines, as Germany clinched the team relay title.

The quartet was the same as that which won Olympic gold at Sochi 2014, prevailing on this occasion with a time of 2:44.062.

The Latvian team of Eliza Cauce, Inars Kivlenieks, Andris Sics and Juris Sics came second, 1.552 seconds behind, while bronze went to Canada’s Alex Gough, Mitchel Malyk, Tristan Walker and Justin Snith, 1.845 seconds back.

The 2015 to 2016 Luge World Cup season is due to continue next weekend in Sochi, the 10th of 12 stops in the racing series.
