France’s Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron recovered from finishing second place after the short dance to successfully defend their ice dance title on the final day of competition at the International Skating Union (ISU) European Figure Skating Championships in Bratislava.

Papadakis and Cizeron put on an excellent free dance performance to "Rain In Your Black Eyes", highlighted by smooth step sequences and eye catching lifts at the Ondrej Nepela Arena.

It earned them a score of 111.97 points and a total of 182.71 as they finished ahead of Italy’s Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte.

"I think it feels even more amazing than last year, because we proved that we can do it again," said Cizeron.

"We managed to have a really great moment during the performance and the audience shared this programme with us."

Cappellini and Lanotte, the 2014 world and European champions, led by more than 1.5 points after the short dance but ranked third in the free dance for a total of 178.01.

The 2013 champions Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev of Russia came third with a new personal best score of 176.50 after ranking second in the free dance.

Earlier in the pairs event, Olympic champions Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov of Russia claimed their fourth European title after racking up a total of 222.66 points.

Performing to "Bram Stoker's Dracula", Volosozhar and Trankov won comfortably despite having a problem in synchronising a triple toe loop.

"It was a very hard start to the day," explained Trankov.

"We had an early practice then we stayed here in the rink before the free programme because we had no time to go to the hotel.

"Most importantly, we won and we finished our programme."

Germany’s Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot scored 200.78 to take second spot, while Russia’s Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov repeated their bronze medal-winning performance from last year with 197.55.

Russia’s seven medals, including two golds, puts them top of the final medal standings.
