A budget of AED19.484 million (£5.3 million/$3.7 million/€4.8 million) has been approved by the Executive Office of the United Arab Emirates National Olympic Committee (UAE NOC) to prepare for and participate in major events in 2016.

The budget, billed as "reflecting the continuing support to attain the desired goals and make more achievements at all levels", will be focused particularly around this year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro where the team will be looking to improve upon their performance at London 2012, where they failed to win a medal.

Other multi-sport events this year are the Children of Asia 6th International Sports Games due to be held in Sakha Republic in Russia from July 5 to 17, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Games in the UAE from September 15 to 21 and the Asian Beach Games in the Vietnamese city of Nha Trang from September 24 until October 3.

This was approved at an Executive Office meeting led by chairman Abdul Rahman Al Owais, the UAE NOC vice-president.

Others present included UAE NOC secretary general Mohammad Al Kamali, along with his deputy Dawoud Al Hajri and financial officer Obaid Salim Al Shamsi.

This will include key branches of sports studies such as Advanced Management Diploma in Olympic Sports Organisations, Masters in Sports Organiwations Management, and Masters in Sports Law.

Two leading officials - executive director Omar Abdul Rahman and Ahmed Al Tayeb, director of sports and technical affairs - completed the opening phase of the Qatar Olympic Committee’s sixth Advanced Diploma in Management of Olympic Sports Organisations last week.

A full UAE NOC Board meeting is due to be held on February 10.

A General Assembly has also been scheduled for March 28.

UAE's last Olympic medal came during the Athens 2004 Games, when shooter Sheikh Ahmed Al-Maktoum claimed the double trap title.

He subsequently coached Britain's Peter Wilson to gold in the same event at London 2012.
