Raonic had appeared on course to upset his opponent after racing through the opening two sets.

Wawrinka, who had beaten his Canadian opponent in their last four meetings, was able to work his way back into the contest, however.

A superb lob over Raonic gave the Swiss player a much needed lift, as he looked to preserve his unbeaten start to the season, and he eventually claimed the third set.

Wawrinka continued his momentum by breaking his big-serving opponent early in the fourth set and he successfully took the contest into a decider.

Raonic rediscovered form which had taken him into a two set advantage, though, achieving the decisive break midway through the decider, sealing a 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-3 victory.

“I'm very happy with the way I played, the way I competed, the way I turned things around after sort of having the momentum against me going into the fifth,” said Raonic, who moved into a Grand Slam quarter-final for the fourth time in his career.

“I'm happy with the situation I've put myself in.

“At the same time, as happy as I am, my mind's already on what's the process for my next challenge.”

Raonic, a semi-finalist at Wimbledon in 2014, will now take on Gael Monfils after the Frenchman secured a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 victory over Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov.

Spain’s David Ferrer, meanwhile, is still yet to drop a set at this year’s tournament as he cruised to a 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 win over America’s John Isner.

He will face Britain’s Andy Murray for a place in the last four, after the second seed ended home interest in the singles draws by overcoming Bernard Tomic 6-4, 6-4, 7-6.

For the first time since 1977, Britain will have representation in both the men’s and women’s quarter-finals after Johanna Konta battled to victory over Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova.

Konta, competing in the main draw of the tournament for the first time, lost the opening set 6-4 but broke early in the second to force a decider.

A thrilling finale saw both players achieve breaks of serve, but Konta prevailed in a gruelling contest, breaking once more to achieve a 4-6, 6-4, 8-6 victory.

Having become the first British woman to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final since Jo Durie in 1984, Konta will meet China’s Shuai Zhang for a place in the last four, after the qualifier continued her stunning run by upsetting America’s Madison Keys, the number 15 seed, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka also continued her fine form, as the 14th seed defeated the Czech Republic’s Barbora Strycova 6-2, 6-4.

She will now meet Angelique Kerber, after she triumphed 6-4, 6-0 in an all-German tie against Annika Beck.
