Olympic modern penathlon champion Laura Asadauskaitė-Zadneprovskienė and International Cycling Union (UCI) World Road Race Championships bronze medallist Ramūnas Navardauskas have scooped the top prizes at the Lithuanian Athletes Awards 2015.

The duo received their awards at a special ceremony at the National Opera Theatre in capital city Vilnius.

The awards themselves are held in conjunction with the Lithuanian National Olympic Committee (LTOK).

Asadauskaitė-Zadneprovskienė, the 2013 world champion, enjoyed another successful year in which she was crowned European champion.

Olympic swimming champion Rūta Meilutytė and short track speed skater Agne Sereikaitė were also nominated for the women's award.

Navardauskas, who competes for the Cannondale team on the UCI pro circuit, became Lithuania’s first ever men’s World Race Championships medallist in 2015.

He beat off competition from rower Mindaugas Griskonis and boxer Eimantas Stanionis to land the men's prize.

The men’s basketball team and rowing duo Milda Valčiukaitė and Donata Vištartaitė won the respective team awards, while the blind hockey team took home the disability award.

For the first time, fans were given the chance to vote for one person or team in each category before a jury, made up of representatives from LTOK, the Lithuanian Department of Physical Education and Sports and the Lithuanian Sports Journalists’ Federation, made the final decision.

A total of 11 prizes were given out during the ceremony.

“These traditional awards have  been going on for more than 20 years,” LTOK President Daina Gudzineviciute said.

“The event has changed format, but the goal remains the same - to honour the most deserving people of Lithuanian sports.

“Each year, the awards attract a growing audience and media attention.

“I am sure - after the Olympic year we will wait for another spectacular event, and choosing the winners will be even more difficult.”
