Lee Chong Wei won the men’s singles crown at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold in Penang after beating Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin in an all-Malaysian final.

The top seed took 42 minutes to record a 21-18, 21-11 win and secure his fifth consecutive title at the event.

But despite winning comfortably, Lee was complimentary of his unseeded opponent’s performance.

"Keep up the good work," he said in addressing the 24-year-old Zainuddin.

"Despite the defeat don't give up.

"At the same time don't ever think that you are great just because you reached the finals.

"There is still a lot of work to be done."

Earlier in the day, the women's singles title went to India’s Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, who beat Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour 21-15, 21-9 to earn her fifth Grand Prix title.

"It is a great feeling to win here," said Sindhu, a two-time World Championships bronze medallist.

"I have not won any open title in India but I hope to change this when I play in next week's India Open Grand Prix."

Despite Lee’s success, there was disappointment for the host nation in both the mixed doubles and men’s doubles finals.

Mixed doubles pair Tan Kien Meng and Lai Pei Jing lost 21-14, 21-19 against China’s Zheng Ziwei and Li Yinhui, while men’s doubles duo Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong suffered a 21-18, 13-21,18-21 defeat at the hands of Indonesia’s Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Markus Fernaldi Gideon.

Japan’s Ayaka Takahashi and Misaki Matsutomo clinched the women’s doubles crown with a 21-18, 22-20 triumph against China’s Yu Yang and Tang Yuanting.
