Great Britain’s Corie Mapp came out on top at the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) Para-bobsleigh World Cup event in St.Moritz after fending off nearest challenger Arturs Klots of Latvia.

Ex-British serviceman Mapp, who lost both his legs back in 2010 when his military vehicle ran over an explosive device in Afghanistan, clocked a time of 2 min 18.64sec to finish 1.03 seconds ahead of Klots.

The United States’ Jason Sturm rounded off the podium, 1.79 behind, while World Cup leader Lonnie Bissonnette of Canada came fourth.

Meanwhile, Ryan Gautieri won the Para-skeleton event with the American clocking 1:13.93.

Britain's Matthew Richardson was second, 0.12 back, while Eric Eierdam, another US competitor, was third and 2:01 off the pace.

The World Cup is set to continue on Friday (January 22) in Igls, Austria, where Mapp, also a member of the British sitting volleyball team, won gold in the inaugural World Cup Para-bobsleigh race last January.

The IBSF told insidethegames in October that it will submit a bid to have Para-bobsleigh and Para-skeleton included on the Winter Paralympic Games Programme at Beijing 2022.

The body was invited to apply by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) after they opened the application process for the Games on October 1.

There are currently six sports on the Programme for Pyeongchang 2018 - Alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, ice sledge hockey, snowboard and wheelchair curling - and the IPC have set a limit of seven for Beijing 2022.

International Olympic Committee member and two-time skeleton Olympian Adam Pengilly of Britain had told insidethegames in December 2014 that the IBSF were "very optimistic" of having a strong candidature and having their bid ready for 2022.
