Azerbaijan's Farida Azizova claimed the women's under 67kg honours at the European Taekwondo Olympic Qualification Tournament in Istanbul.

The European Games silver medallist saw off Rabia Gulek of Germany in the final with both competitors earning a Rio 2016 quota place for their countries.

Gulek's brother Tahir had already booked his spot at Rio so the Games will be a family affair.

"It’s such a beautiful moment, I am speechless," said Rabia Gulek, who achieved her objective despite only winning a silver medal.

"Without the hard times, I wouldn’t know this joy.

"My coach protected me, guided me and now me, my uncle, my brother and coach, we go to Rio.

"It’s such a special feeling.

"I was happy for all of my family to go to the Olympics.

"But now I have now my own joy.

"Rio is calling and I answered today."

In the women's over 67kg, Norway's Tina Skaar triumphed over The Netherlands' Reshmie Oogink, but both will advance.

There was also joy in the men's under 58kg category for champion Ron Attias of Israel and Spain's runner-up  Jesús Tortosa, while in the men's under 68kg, Poland's Karol Robak saw off Croatia's Filip Grgić with both men earning Olympic quotas.

"I’ve been practicing taekwondo for 22 years, since I was four," said Grgic.

"I became world champion in 2008 and nearly 10 years later I am going to the Olympics."

The action continues at the WOW Convention Center tomorrow.
