Australia's women enjoyed a crushing 87-37 win at the Rio 2016 basketball test event at the Carioca Arena 1 in this summer's Olympic host city.

The Opals eased to victory over their South American opponents with coach Brendan Joyce using the fixture to rotate his squad.

After winning the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Oceania Women's Championship in August, Australia have already booked their place in the Olympic tournament.

They began the clash with nine unanswered points and had an 18 point advantage at the end of the first quarter, which set the tone for the rest of the contest.

Suzy Batkovic top-scored for the Australians with 16 points and 11 rebounds during her 19 minutes on the court, while Katie-Rae Ebzery and Nat Burton both scored 11 points each.

Australia were also boosted by the appearance of Erin Phillips, a guard with Women's National Basketball Association team Los Angeles Sparks, who appeared for the first time since suffering a knee injury at the end of last year.

"Our defence was very good," said Joyce to ABC.

"I did not actually expect it to be that good.

"We had only two training camps before the game but I was happy with our execution."

In the other match in the four team tournament, hosts Brazil thrashed Venezuela 112-41.

Australia will now meet Venezuela tomorrow, with Brazil playing Argentina before the final round robin matches on Sunday (January 17).

The two defeated teams today have yet to book their place at the Olympics, but are set to play in the women's World Olympic Qualifying Tournament at an as yet unannounced venue in June.

Basketball at the Rio Games will take place between August 6 and 21.

The United States, Serbia, Canada, Japan and Senegal have also already qualified for the women's tournament.
