Olympic skiing champion Picabo Street has been charged with assault and domestic violence in the United States after allegedly pushing her father down a flight of stairs.

The 44-year-old, who won the Super-G gold medal at the Nagano Games in 1998, was arrested on December 23 at her home in 2002 Olympic host Salt Lake City.

She reportedly told officers that she had locked her 76-year-old father, Roland, in the basement before calling the police.

Roland Street is alleged to have pulled his daughter's hair in a fight which followed him crashing his car into the house when attempting to leave.

He reportedly suffered cuts to his elbow and neck and may have hit his head, while the skier is also alleged to have grabbed him around the shoulders and neck.

The incident is said to have happened in front of the Olympian's three children, and as a result she has been charged with three counts of misdemeanor domestic violence in the presence of a child and one count of misdemeanor assault.

She is due to face a court hearing on February 16.

According to reports, Street's lawyer Jason Richards said that she denies wrongdoing and hopes for an "amicable" solution to what she considers to be a private family matter.

In addition to her success in Nagano, Street also won a silver medal at the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, and World Championship downhill gold in Sierra Nevada in 1996.

At the height of her career she was one of the world's most famous and popular skiers.

She became the first American woman to win the World Cup downhill title in 1995, but her time in the sport was blighted by serious knee injuries.

Street retired after finishing 16th in the downhill at the Salt Lake City Games, and went on to work as an analyst for FOX Sports at Sochi 2014.
