After opening their account by thrashing Croatia 29-3, the Spanish were in an equally dominant mood as they brushed aside France 21-2 in Group B.

Maica Garcia Godoy, part of the Spain side which won the World Championships gold medal in 2013, netted on four occasions in the match as Spain found themselves 11-1 in front at half-time.

With four teams from both six teams groups advancing to the quarter-finals the Spanish are now extremely well placed to progress, with Athens 2004 Olympic champions Italy also making it two wins from two today.

They saw off Germany 22-3, with their opponents suffering their heavy loss after opening their account by edging out hosts Serbia 14-13.

The home nation did have something to cheer today, however, as they pipped neighbours Croatia 8-4 to record an opening success of the tournament.

In the men's competition, which is also being held in Belgrade, Greece recorded a first win in Group D after drawing 8-8 with nine-times Olympic champions Hungary in their opening encounter.

This time they saw off Turkey 21-6, while the Hungarians also opened their victory account, beating Russia 12-6.

In Group C, Germany won for the first time by beating Georgia 11-9, while Italy maintained their 100 per cent record with an 11-5 success over Romania and are now guaranteed to finish top.

All 16 teams across four groups will qualify for the knock-out stages, but those who finish higher in their standings will be given, on paper at least, easier matches in the next round.
