Brazilian lightweight Robson Donato Conceição has been named the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Boxer of the Month for December following his victory at the recent Rio 2016 Olympic Games test event.

Conceição was in superb form on home soil at the competition, held from December 4 to 6 at the Riocentro venue, as he dispatched Britain’s Luke McCormack in the semi-final to set up a meeting with Uzbekistan's Hurshid Tojibaev for gold.

The Brazilian appeared eager to stake an early claim for the title in Rio next year as he produced a commanding display to seal a comfortable win on points.

The triumph for the 27-year-old came after he took bronze at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Doha in October, losing out to Azerbaijan's Albert Selimov in the semi-final.

His performance was still enough to secure a quota berth for Rio 2016.

He was named as one of the 60 first confirmed qualifiers for the Olympics by AIBA on December 10 and was the first Brazilian boxer to guarantee his place at his home Games.

Conceição burst onto the scene with flyweight gold at the Brazilian National Boxing Championships at the age of 17 in 2005.

His triumph proved to be the springboard for what has been a successful amateur career for the Brazilian so far and he went on to represent his country at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The lightweight star claimed a silver medal at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, after falling just short in his gold medal bout with Cuba’s Yasnier Toledo, and competed for Brazil at London 2012.

His best-ever result at a World Championships followed in 2013 as he clinched a silver medal in Almaty in Kazakhstan and finished the fourth season of the World Series of Boxing, the sport’s premier amateur team competition, unbeaten.

Conceição also impressed at this year’s AMBC American Confederation Boxing Championships in Vargas in Venezuela where he defeated Cuba’s three-time world champion Lazaro Alvarez to win the gold medal.
