Danish Handball Association President Per Bertelsen has hailed the 2015 Women’s World Championship as a “great success” following the completion of the tournament yesterday.

Olympic champions Norway secured a dominant 31-20 victory over first-time finalists The Netherlands in the gold medal match at the Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning, while matches at the Championships also took place in the cities of Naestved, Kolding and Frederikshavn.

Around 150,000 fans watched action in the venues throughout the 24-team event, which was held from December 5 to 20, while organisers claim 1.975 million viewers watched the quarter-final between hosts Denmark and Romania.

"I am very, very happy after this Championship,” said Bertelsen.

“All the goals we had set for the event have been achieved.

“The arenas have been full of spectators and the atmosphere has been excellent, we have created unique, feminine and creative settings, and financially we also reach our goal.”

Despite the Danish team bowing out at the quarter-final stage of the event after an extra-time defeat to the Romanians, Bertelsen believes the event has helped to grow the sport further in the country.

He also praised the contribution of the 1,200 volunteers who worked at the Championships, which were supported by Sport Event Denmark.

"Four fantastic host cities, Naestved, Frederikshavn, Kolding and Herning, and one single small nation, has certainly created a festive setting for this Handball World Championship in December,” said Lars Lundov, Sport Event Denmark chief executive.

“Internationally, Denmark has once again taken a leading position, each time we in Denmark handle a Championship, we can raise the bar.

“With the European Championship for men last year and the World Championship for women this year, we have a good basis for future handball Championships in our country, such as the World Championship for men in 2019 and European Championship for women in 2020.”

It wasn't all plain sailing at the Championships, however, after video replays were scrapped midway through the tournament following an error made in the group stage match between France and South Korea.

A Korean goal which should have stood was disallowed despite the technology being in place, prompting the International Handball Federation (IHF) to remove its use as "margin for error cannot be completely excluded".

The game finished as a 22-22 draw.
