Defending champions The Netherlands are one of eight confirmed entrants in the 2016 International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) Powerchair Hockey European Championships.

The event is due to take place in Alcobendas, 13 kilometres north of Madrid, from July 10 to 17.

Belgium, beaten finalists at the last edition of the Championships, held in 2012, reigning bronze medallists Finland, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and host country Spain will also battle it out for the European title.

The next milestone on the road to the competition comes on February 17 when the official draw for the tournament is scheduled to be conducted.

It will be the first European Championships to be held in Spain and has been organised by Local Organising Committee of the Spanish Federation for Sports for the Physically Disabled (FEDFF), along with the support of the National Sports Council and the regional Government of Madrid.

The Mayor and City Hall of Alcobendas and the Madrid Federation for Sports for the Physically Disabled (FMDDF) have also been involved in the preparations for next year’s event.

All matches will be screened on the FEDFF’s designated channel, which will also provide news and updates in the build-up to the competition.

Under its former name, electric wheelchair hockey, powerchair hockey was one of nine new sports or disciplines to apply for inclusion at Tokyo 2020, only to fail to make it through to the final stage.

It was eliminated along with powerchair football, 3x3 intellectually impaired basketball, amputee football, one person multi-hull sailing, blind match racing sailing and 3-on-3 wheelchair basketball.

Only badminton and taekwondo were ultimately approved by the International Paralympic Committee Governing Board.

It is hoped that the event in Spain will help attract interest around the sport with with an eye to another Paralympic inclusion tilt.
