South Korea set the highest trios score of the day to top the block one-squad two standings at the World Bowling Women’s World Championships in Abu Dhabi.

Hyerin Son, Jinsun Kim and Seungja Baek combined to post 2,079 points, while Singapore came second and Sweden third with totals of 2,061 and 2,003 respectively.

England’s Danni Hopcroft, Jo Allsebrook and Lisa John headed the block two-squad two rankings with 1,399 points, followed by the threesomes of Singapore on 1,343 and South Korea on 1,337.

Block one-squad one saw Sweden’s Rebecka Larsen, Ida Andersson and Victoria Johansson amass 2,042 points to finish four clear of the United States and a further 43 ahead of Denmark.

But it was Singapore’s Daphne Tan, Joey Yeo and Jazreel Tan who prevailed in block two-squad one, racking up 2,046 points to condemn Indonesia to the runners-up spot on 2,031 with the US in third on 2,001.

South Korea’s overall performance sends them through to tomorrow’s trios medal round as top seeds with Singapore, England and the US also advancing.

The singles semi-finals, involving South Korea’s Eunhee Jeon and Yeonju Hwang, and Singapore’s Cherie Tan and Shayna Ng, are also scheduled to be held tomorrow, as well as the final.

A total of 147 athletes from 30 countries are battling it out for top honours at the Khalifa International Bowling Centre in Zayed Sports City.

This year’s event is the 17th edition of the biennial World Championships, first held in Mexico City in 1963.

As well as the singles and trios, athletes are competing for the doubles, teams, all events and masters events titles.
