Home favourite Kenneth Gangnes went one better than his runners-up finish yesterday to take the gold medal in the second round of the International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Jumping World Cup in Lillehammer.

Having narrowly missed out on victory to Germany’s Severin Freund in the weather-affected first round just 24 hours earlier, Gangnes produced jumps of 98 metres and 99m on the normal hill to claim his first World Cup win with 278.2 points.

The silver and bronze medals went to Slovenia’s Peter Prevc and Gangnes' fellow Norwegian Johann Andre Forfang respectively.

"I'm lost for words, it's unbelievable that I got my first win in the World Cup," said Gangnes.

"My goal for the season was to be in the top 20 in every competition and this hasn't changed.

"We have a lot of young guys on our team with a lot of energy.

"I think this is one reason for our success."

Prevc missed out on his first win of the season by 1.8 points after posting jumps of 96.5m and 100.5m, while Forfang registered 96.5m and 99.5m for a total of 272.5 points and his second World Cup medal.

"It feels really good to be on the podium here in Lillehammer," said Forfang.

"It was a nice competition and the conditions were fair - it was really fun.

"At first I was a bit disappointed that we didn't jump on the large hill, but it's good that we could have two competitions here."

Overall World Cup champion Freund failed to make the podium for the first time this season, finishing fifth with 269.1 points.

Nevertheless, the German will still wear the overall World Cup leader's yellow bib during the next competition in Nizhny Tagil, Russia from next Friday to Sunday (December 11 to 13).

With 205 points, he remains one clear of Gangnes and a further 20 ahead of Prevc.
