The women’s under 51 kilogram division boxer has been touted as one of the country’s potential Olympc medal hopes for Rio 2016 having claimed bronze at last year's International Boxing Association (AIBA) Women’s World Boxing Championships.

Costa is currently ranked fourth in the flyweight division behind the United States’ Marlen Esparza, Canada’s Mandy Bujold and Britain's London 2012 gold medallist Nicola Adams.

The Brazilian was found to have the diuretic furosemide, which can be used for weight loss or as a masking agent, in a urine sample taken in September.

“Clelia Costa, was suspended for 180 days after being caught in anti-doping test carried out at the end of last September, in São Paulo, at the request of the Brazilian Authority Doping control,” a Brazilian Boxing Confederation statement read.

“Data collection was conducted out of competition.”

She could be banned for four years if she is found guilty at a hearing due to take place next year. 

"This athlete tested positive in an out of competition test conducted by the Brazilian Doping Control Authority (ABDC) at a national level," an AIBA spokesman told insidethegames.

"The National Federation will make a decision and will inform the AIBA and we will take the necessary action."

The Brazilian is yet to qualify for next year's Olympics and the provisional suspension prevent her from competing at this week’s Rio 2016 Boxing Test Event, where several berths for next year’s Games are set to be up for grabs.

Due to take place between Friday and Sunday (December 4 and 60, the event will see 60 men competing in 10 Olympic weight categories, while all three women’s weight categories will be in action.

AIBA Women's world champion Claressa Shields is set to compete in the under 75kg event, with the American building towards the defence of her Olympic title.

Meanwhile, in the men’s events Cuba's London 2012 gold medalist Robeisy Ramirez will be one of the boxers to watch in the men’s under 52kg flyweight event, while Kazakhstan’s Ivan Dychko is tipped for success in the men’s over 91kg super-heavyweight class.

“As we draw nearer to 2016 and what is likely to be one of the most spectacular Olympic Games of all time, this is the perfect moment for the boxers and organisers to take part in a test event held by Rio 2016 Organising Committee,” said C K Wu, President of AIBA. 

“The boxers and the city alike are entering the final stages of preparations for the world’s biggest sporting event, and we want to give men’s and women’s boxing the perfect platform for the enjoyment of fans around the world.”
